Annual Cake Auction for Boy Scouts

I'd really like to be posting about a personal situation that happened today, but in order to protect myself for the moment I am refocusing that effort into talking about the Cub Scout Annual Cake Auction. I am the COR for our pack, which was a position thrust upon me that I am still figuring out. Our pack recently recruited like 33 new scouts so now we have 45 scouts or so. The annual cake auction is our big fundraising for the year - every successful auction means we won't have to do car washes (YUCK!), popcorn sales, or other various stuff. We do a couple of other minor ones but this is our big deal.

The cake auction is so much fun - we have some really creative parents in our groups so it's kind of an ordeal to see what turns up. Some parents hire professional cake decorators or spend hours designing their item. Every year, I've always had BIG plans that don't quite turn out. The picture up above was one of our contributions last year - turned out pretty OK. That is jello in the middle to simulate blood. It seems like cupcakes are the biggest sellers so this year I've been test baking some ideas. Since I want it to be a surprise I won't post pictures of what I am thinking but I will post some of the other submissions from last year. ok well blogger hates me right now so pictures of more cakes to come later.

And can I tell you that we always buy way too much at the cake auction and never eat it all??

Oh my gosh - a year?!?!

I can't believe it's been a year since I've updated my blog. Poor, neglected thing. I wonder how many people say they're going to update it and then they don't?

Well this post is BORING but it at least let me remember my log-in info and remind me to get it in gear!

More exciting posts to follow. :)

What an interesting email...

So I just got the most interesting email from the Clark County School District. I wanted to share and see if other people got this email and what your thoughts are on it. I do like the proactive approach that they are even talking about this. It is amazing what the advancement of technology has meant for the social aspect of life. Between GPS, social media, and texting, it's a whole new world.

CCSD E-mail Message
Subject: Text Parties
From: Superintendent Walt Rulffes and Sheriff Doug Gillespie

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Clark County School District and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department are contacting parents to inform them of the dangerous connection between texting and parties.

It has become very common for young people to text each other the location of a party. Unfortunately, these texts often get forwarded to uninvited guests, causing large numbers of people—including gang members—to arrive. These out-of-control events are referred to as “text parties.”

Recently the LVMPD Gang Crimes Bureau has responded to 28 text parties that ended in violence. Several of these incidents involved stabbings and shootings, and one resulted in a homicide. Some of these parties started out as innocent private birthday gatherings, while others occurred when the parents were absent. In all of these cases, however, the violence stemmed from the arrival of uninvited guests who learned of the event in a text message.

As a parent, you need to be aware of this alarming trend. Please talk to your children and warn them about the dangers of text parties.

Here are some tips you may want to consider:

• If the location of a party has been widely texted, advise your children to not attend.
• Tell your child to never text party information.
• Advise your children to stay with their friends and avoid parties for strangers.
• Remember that you are responsible for any parties at your residence.
• If you have any information about a text party, please report it to the police.
• Be aware that the LVMPD will be taking the necessary enforcement actions to shut down these types of parties.

On behalf of the Clark County School District and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, thank you for talking with your children and doing your part to ensure a safe community.

Sincerely,

CCSD Superintendent Walt Rulffes
and
Sheriff Douglas C. Gillespie

Where does the time go?

Today was a great balance of work and play. School starts on Monday and my middle stepson is starting to middle school. To say he is excited is an understatement. We took him back-to-school shopping this morning, getting all the supplies that were listed and a couple of new clothes.

I remember when I started school how excited I was to line out my new clothes, re-check my new school supplies in my backpack and wonder about all the new things I was going to learn. I was that dorky girl in school who was teacher's pet and looked forward to the homework that they assigned.

To that end, not much has changed. I'm a few credits shy of getting my B.A. and while I don't enjoy the time constraints, I've still enjoyed learning and doing different projects. I had to take last semester off when my brother and I started our company and since I've been working 12 hour days it looks like next semester isn't going to happen. We're looking to add a Project Manager to help us out so we can remember what it's like to have a life outside of our company.

However, I've really missed school and I worry about not challenging myself. I don't want to get burned out on work so I've been thinking lately about how to add in more balance. Today I took the plunge and signed up for the craft class on the Red Velvet Art site. I've loved Elsie's blog for about 3 months since I've discovered it. When I saw the post for the Autumn class I thought it would be a good way to kind of be in a classroom environment, definitely something I enjoy, and keep myself challenged. I'm super excited to start and see what kind of crazy Christmas gifts I can make. I'm sure pictures will follow...

Time to go lay on the hammock and read a few pages. I'm behind 18 magazines and at least 9 books. The husband is out with friends and the only kiddo we have this weekend is at a sleepover. I'm giddy with the free time.

Make today a great day.

Welcome to the Dark side

Well since I own an Internet Marketing company and I am constantly telling my clients about the importance of a web presence and the need for a blog so that people can interact with you, I figured I should take my own advice and get to it. This will be interesting because in addition to owning 2 companies with my brother, I am also a wife, a stepmom to 3 boys, a mom to 2 dogs, 1 Russian tortoise and a whole slew of various friends that I pick up along the way. So I usually have some interesting stories from at least 1 of these aspects. I promise to try to at least update this blog once a week if not sooner. I'm wondering how addictive it will become. This will be interesting for sure...
